This is our Social Security Works for America series of state reports. In each report you will find detailed information down to the congressional district level on the importance and impact of Social Security. 

Social Security works for the nation and for the residents of every state and congressional district too. Social Security’s average benefit is very modest, which is why America cannot afford to cut it. Instead, Congress should work hard to strengthen Social Security, not cut it.

On August 14, 1935, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. With one pen stroke he laid the foundation of modern American social policy. Today, millions of retirees live in dignity thanks to their monthly Social Security benefit payment.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans have now called for Senator Alan Simpson, co-chair of the White House deficit commission, to step down - after he insulted the head of the Older Women's League, Ashley Carson, by implying that her dedication to protecting retirees was not "honest work" - and then he revealed what he thinks of Social Security: "a milk cow with 310 million tits."

With regard to the future of Social Security, there are some really dangerous ideas out there — and one proposal that makes a lot of sense.

One of the worst ideas is privatization. After the greed and recklessness of Wall Street caused markets to collapse in 2008, does anyone still seriously believe it would be a good idea to turn the retirement security of millions of Americans over to Wall Street CEOs whose dishonesty and irresponsibility have no end?
